harlow fields school
client: Harlow Fields School & College
The school is a place for children and young people aged from 3 to 18, with a wide range of special needs including those with profound and multiple learning difficulties.
Following a detailed feasibility developed through close consultation, ATA has completed a series of phased upgrades at Harlow Fields School and College, Essex, for pupils with special needs. This includes a new welcoming reception area, meeting rooms, new accessible toilets, a friendly medical room and a new playground.
ATA have developed clear, imaginative and unambiguous design solutions, creating a calm yet robust environment, using natural light and materials.
A new playground for primary children, was also designed with living willow tunnels, swings, and musical instruments. Green oak benches and a bamboo sun shelter with lots of planters give the children a feeling of the natural environment, while the road track with crossings helps the children practice their road skills.
Models, bubble drawings and lots of discussion were used by ATA in workshops with staff, children, parents and carers and governors to develop proposals.
Fundamental to the design is a sustainable approach to refurbishment. The work has been undertaken in phases while the school was occupied, achieved through close co-operation between ATA, the client and contractor.
Four phases of work: july2009-jan2010,jan-april2010,may-dec2010, march-june2011, 5th phase currently at design stage. Traditional Contract, ATA contract administrator.
