tree house nursery

contract value for all phases: £500,000.00
completed: 2006

AJ small building of the year award 2006

Phased work to Holmewood and the new Tree House nursery includes a new extension to the existing nursery school in Tulse Hill, for LB Lambeth Education, to create a Children’s Centre comprising a new building for children under three and babies, and work to the existing administration block and hall.

The new nursery – Tree House nursery, is built around a timber decked courtyard with an existing favourite Tulip tree in its centre. All rooms face the courtyard. The scheme recreates the link with nature which so many city children miss.

The design was inspired and designed around the tulip tree. ATA encouraged the children to do drawings of the tree and Keziha’s was turned into laser cut plywood screens.

The new building is of FSC timber frame construction with timber cladding and recycled newspaper insulation. Sliding glazed doors can open fully to allow the flow of internal/ external play space. Natural finishes were used throughout.
