client: North Herfordshire Homes
On the fringes of Hitchin, the Westmill estate is a mix of social housing of differing ages and type.
The estate lacked community facilities and the antisocial use of public spaces that are not overlooked, was causing problems. The framework plan was created to stimulate regeneration by private and social landlords, and to create a safe environment for young and old together.
Proposals include the creation of a public square surrounded by local amenities, youth facilities and facilities for adults to help to create a lively centre for Westmill.
ATA’s approach included detailed site analysis, and identification of opportunities for potential new build and the refurbishment of existing flats and houses. The regeneration plan was developed with the close participation of local residents through practical presentations and workshops.
Environmental sustainability is fundamental to proposals not only to save energy and use environmentally friendly building materials and techniques, but also to create healthy and functional public spaces.
