wolves lane

client: Woolves Lane horticultural centre
study completed: 2011

A secret and special destination in North London, Wolves Lane Horticultural Centre is a little Eden project, managed at present by LB Haringey, but planning to become independent. Greenhouses model tropical, desert and rainforest climate and vegetation, and there is a plantshop open to all. People with learning difficulties, schoolchildren and local people volunteer, participate in environmental education and enjoy the calm atmosphere and friendly cafe.

ATA undertook the masterplan study for developing the buildings and glasshouses in association with Groundworks who are developing the new business model. Workshops with stakeholders developed a spatial understanding of the complex and overlapping user requirements, and a courtyard scheme was designed which can be a phased development. Refurbishment of the glasshouse, renewable services and efficient water collection and reuse proposals form part of the scheme.
